1. Exfoliate (2–24 Hours Before)
Use a loofah or washcloth to gently exfoliate your entire body 2 to 24 hours before your appointment. Pay special attention to dry areas like elbows, knees, and ankles — these spots tend to grab extra color and look darker without a good scrub. Proper exfoliation promotes even coverage and helps your tan last longer by removing dead skin cells. Just don't overdo it — you want smooth skin, not irritated skin!
2. Remove Unwanted Hair
If you shave, do it 8–12 hours before your appointment. If you wax, give yourself at least 24 hours before coming in. Always use a sharp, clean razor with a gentle lubricating product like hair conditioner. This gives your skin time to calm down and your pores to close before the tanning solution is applied.
3. Come In With Clean, Product-Free Skin
Skip the makeup, perfume, lotion, and deodorant the day of your appointment. These products create a barrier that can prevent the tanning solution from developing evenly. If you've been using any other sunless tanning lotions or sprays, stop using them at least 7 days before your visit. Remove all jewelry too!
4. Wear the Right Clothes
